A brand new theatrical presentation that reimagines 'Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Café' through the voices of women in eSwatini.
Written by Fannie Flagg in the USA in the '80s, ‘Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Cafe’ follows an unlikely blossoming friendship between a woman in her mid-40s and an elderly lady, Ninny, who tells stories of her past in the small town of Whistle Stop, Alabama. In her tales, she reveals the friendship between two young women she once knew, who opened up the Whistle Stop Cafe, which became an important hub for the community, welcoming all of its people, regardless of skin colour or financial status, to savour its wonderful cuisine and welcoming atmosphere. The book was adapted into a film in the '90s by Jon Avnet, starring two Oscar-winnning actresses, Kathy Bates and Jessica Tandy.
Focusing on community, friendship, love and resilience, 'Belong: Fried Green Tomatoes' play deals with strong themes and evaluates the importance of a supportive community and friendship in the face of adversity. This production is greatly supported by the Eswatini Theatre Club and the US Embassy of eSwatini for the global Freedom250 USA Independence Day celebrations.
This will be the first in the 'Booked!' series, a long-term initiative that reimagines classic texts from around the world through the voices of emaSwati.
